Hazard evaluation from GLOFs in the Cordillera Huayhuash

Hazard evaluation from GLOFs in the Cordillera Huayhuash Abstract: Proglacial lakes in high-mountain regions recently experienced dynamic development related to the ongoing climatic changes. Most of the mountain ranges were widely studied with respect to hazards posed by proglacial lakes. However, the Peruvian Cordillera Huayhuash was omitted by any research of this type so far. In this thesis first, the author develops and assesses the inventory of glacial lakes in the Cordillera Huayhuash, and second, evaluates the hazard from GLOFs. After a thorough discussion and comparison to other world's major mountain ranges, significant conclusions are made. Most of the characteristics of the lakes in the Cordillera Huayhuash are influenced by a local factor - fluvial erosion that has occurred since the last glacial maximum. Nevertheless, general principles such as the statistical distribution of lakes according to their elevation that are valid to other compared regions may still be identified based on the data. Lakes of the Cordillera Huayhuash generally pose minor or even no GLOF hazard, the few exceptions were further analyzed in detail. Risk analysis methods of natural catastrophic processes in high mountain areas

Glacial hazards such as ice or rock avalanches, debris flows, jökulhlaups or glacial lake outburst floods threaten lives and livelihoods of people. They may grow to unexpected magnitude, travel very long distances and afflict vast areas. To prevent loss of life and human installation damage, risk analyses need to be assessed for hazardous regions. There are various methods to gain information on slope stability, geology of moraine dam or loose debris availability. They can be divided into those used during terrain on-site research and methods of remote sensing. Based on processed data a risk analysis is created and mitigation measures are carried out if necessary.

Adam Emmer: Dynamic of evolution and hazardousness of lakes in the Cordillera Blanca (Peru) Abstract: High mountain environment of the Cordillera Blanca (Peru) is undergoing prespicious (goe)environmantal changes such as glacier retreat and associated formation and evolution of lakes. Glacial lakes may represent a threat for the society in case of sudden release of (part of) retained water ("glacial lake outburst flood"; GLOF). Reliable identification of hazardous lakes is a key persumption of effective GLOF risk management. The fundamental part of this thesis lies in creation of new method for assessing susceptibility of lakes to outburst floods, reflecting regional specifics of these events in the study area (preconditions, causes and mechanisms) and unsuitability of existing approaches revealed in previous research. Newly created method take into account five scenarios of GLOFs, which are assessed separately, using the combination of decision trees allowing integration of qualitative and quantitative characteristics (an overall number of 17 characteristics of the dam, lake and lake surrounding enter the assessment procedure). INVENTORY AND ANALYSIS OF RISK GEOMORPHOLOGICAL PROCESSES IN THE CHILEAN PART OF PATAGONIA USING RS

Area of interest of this bachelor thesis is part of Chilean Patagonia. It is spread through the Chilean regions of Los Lagos, Aysén and Magallanes. The local landscape consists of crystal blue lakes, glaciers, fjords and snow-capped mountains. Creating this landscape is involved in many endogenous and exogenous geomorphological processes. These processes take place on earth for millions of years, some of them, become to be risky when people began settling in this territory. Among these risk geomorphological processes in the countries of interest include earthquake, tsunami, volcanic activity, landslides and Glacial Lake Outburst Flood. The bachelor thesis also contains a chapter on remote sensing and its possible application in the prevention of risk processes or monitoring. The bachelor thesis is closed by a chapter with author's own assessment of these processes. The methodology of work is based on a review of foreign literature. Evaluation of natural hazards of glacial Lake, Nepal

Current dynamic of global climate change is the trigger of new natural processes such as glacial lake outburst floods. One example is lake Imja located in the hinterland of Mt. Everest. Outburst of lake Imja would have undoubtedly negative impact on financial and cultural climate of attached area. This diploma thesis is focusing on the various factors and its imapct on the stability of moraine. The main aim of this thesis is to evaluate possibility of impact of rockfall into the lake, to monitor the development of its expansion in comparison with growing temperatures in last 60 years and also to assess the development of morphology of moraine containing dead ice. The results of the thesis indicate accelerating expansion of the lake at the expense of the Imja and Lhotse Shar glaciers, for which the rising means of temperatures of the months in the warm half of the year are particularly important. The results also show that there is no risk of producing wave after impact of rockfall into the lake, as the lateral moraines are sufficiently high to protect the lake. Inventory and analysis of risky geomorphological processes in the Chilean part of Patagonia

Area of interest of this bachelor thesis is part of Chilean Patagonia. It is spread across the Chilean regions of Los Lagos, Aysén and Magallanes. The local environment is influenced by several phenomena, which act separately and predominantly together. Local tectonic processes, especially the subduction of the Nazca Plate under the South American Plate, affect the risky processes of earthquakes (and subsequent tsunamis and landslides) and volcanism. The tectonics also contributed to the creation of a local relief, which, together with the climate (and its changes), also affected the specific type of floods called Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF). These geomofphological processes take place on earth for millions of years, but some of them became to be risky at the moment people began settling in territory of their influence. The analysis of glacial retreat of selected mountain regions of New Zealand and natural hazards from GLOFs

This thesis analyses the glacier fluctuations in New Zealand since late Pliocen until today (2017) and evaluates GLOFs (Glacier Lake Outburst Floods) hazards from all proglacial lakes of New Zealand. Background research of a wide range of scientific sources was used to describe New Zealand glacier fluctuations during the last ~2.6 Ma, uncover local climatic and tectonic specifics, describe uneven behaviour of different glacier types and summarise current knowledge about climatological forcings to New Zealand glaciers. Compared to the timing of glaciations in the Norther Hemisphere, an earlier onset of LGM (Last Glacial Maximum) and LIA (Little Ice Age) was recorded in New Zealand. A dramatic glacier advance of short- to medium-response time glaciers was recorded between 1983 and 1999. This advance was caused by changes of atmospheric and oceanic circulation patterns around New Zealand. A detailed study of the past events revealed that really few events were recorded in New Zealand history. While englacial outburst floods are relatively common from Franz Josef Glacier, no moraine dam rupture and only two GLOFs from a proglacial lake were recorded in New Zealand history.
